Children & Young Person's Service

 Children And Young Person's Service

We provide emotional support to Children and Young People (CYP) of all gender identities - from 5 years up to aged 18 -who have experienced or are experiencing domestic abuse (We are able to support younger cyp if age/stage appropriate-this can be discussed at the referral stage)
It is crucial to recognise that cyp in their own right are survivors of domestic abuse and enable them to make sense of their experiences and empower them in their healing journey through safe, supportive interventions which include both 1:1 and group support.
Please read more below about the different ways we can provide support and information about the work we do.

Individual Support (1:1 Support )

Each child or young person will be allocated a key worker who will work with them for approx 12 sessions( Longer if a need is identified through our review/evaluation process) During the sessions we will focus on feelings, safety, healthy relationships, and domestic abuse using child-centred and trauma informed approaches. The key workers use targeted resources to work through their experience of domestic abuse and support them to feel safer, have their voices heard and that their views and rights are respected at all times.  Our Children and Young Person's Workers offer a safe space within school, at home, or in the community to explore how their experiences have affected them and how to move forward.

Group Work

We deliver an afterschool club which uses age-appropriate focused work lasting approx. 8-12 weeks and delivered during term time. The sessions covered are those that are most prevalent in young people's lives in Moray - bullying, safety, domestic abuse, healthy relationships, friendships, conflict, equality, and gender roles. During sessions the cyp often realise that they are not alone and are able to seek support, strength and understanding from their peers. This supports them in building strong positive relationships in going forward. We also have opportunities to partnership work with outside agencies who provide our cyp with inclusion activities, ensuring they feel valued and respected.

Family Support

We offer family support to families residing within refuge which highlights the effects of domestic abuse and provides a therapeutic support system for the family to recover and develop more positive relationships. Our Family Support Practitioner offers practical and emotional support during this time of transition and up to six weeks of follow-on support after they move into their own accommodation.
If you have a concern about a child or young person who may be affected by domestic abuse either within their family or within their own intimate relationships and you are looking for advice, guidance or support please do not hesitate to contact the Children and Young Person's Service at: cyps@moraywomensaid.co.uk 01343 548550
